Can anyone provide HONEST answers to my questions about joining the army?

I'm a college grad with a bachelors in computer information systems, CompTIA A+ certified, will be CompTIA Network+ certified in 3 weeks, cant find a job that suits me for crap and I'm now entertaining the idea of enlisting in the army to become an Information Technology Specialist (25B). i have a few questions. How is it REALLY like once u get to basic training? When I think of basic training I think of freakin jail how your being hounded all the time. What's it like in AIT and what happens after you're done? I'm from Brooklyn, NY. I was wondering if it's possible to request to be stationed in/near NY or do they pretty much tell u to go to Iraq and BOOM ur forced to go? I'm ignorant to army life. how is it like in terms of social life, having fun and so forth? Also, what are the odds of being deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan as a college graduate? I don't know where my job developer heard this from, but she said something about how you're less likely to be deployed if you have a college education. Sounds fishy to me. A college education will not factor at all in whether your deployed to a combat zone. Your job and the needs of the service you belong to will determine that. I have a bachelors degree and I'm deploying to Iraq. When you begin boot camp it will be very rough at first. A huge culture shock. It is worse than jail because you are forced to do everything the drill instructor says. You don't get punished with PT in jail. After a while you will get used to the way things are in boot camp and it will be tolerable. AIT is a little better than boot camp. You will get a little more freedom and allowed to do things that you couldn't do in basic training. And then as you put your time in and gain rank your life will become better in the military. Once your done with your basic training and AIT you will be allowed to select a couple of places to be assigned but it will always be up to the Army to decide where your going. One thing you should think about is going officer. You have a degree and you may find life as an officer a little more your preference. Talk with an Army Officer recruiter and see what the difference is. Good Luck.

The PPP has proven effective and has placed more than 250,000 federal employees to date. The PPP human resources specialists will review your resume, qualifications, specialized experience KSAs, option codes, grade and series to assist with career transition.

Many BRAC-affected Department of Defense (DOD) workers send their resumes to the PPP to help land a new federal position. This resume, needed for the PPO service, is similar to the USAJOBS federal resume, but there are distinct differences. The tips below will help you maximize the services of the PPP human resources specialist in locating a position for you.

1. Study Chapter 10 of the DOD PPP Operations Manual (1998). Determine the match between your occupational series and the option codes. Option codes are used for registration for the PPP, to more specifically define qualifications and help clarify job requirements.

Your PPP federal resume needs to demonstrate specialized skills in 2 or 3 occupational series for which you are qualified. This will ensure that your PPP counselor and panelist can help you land a new federal position that you will be qualified for, while utilizing your experience and qualifications.

2. Write a statement of "objective" on your PPP Federal Resume. The statement of "objective" listed below is an example of an individual who was classified as an Electronic Technician, but performed IT Specialist duties for many years. A former physician at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Plains Township e-mailed personal medical information of approximately 3,000 patients to a home computer, according to a Geisinger Health System news release. The news release is required under federal guidelines making the public aware about the breach, according to a privacy outreach specialist with the U.S. Health and Human Services in Washington, D.C. Geisinger Health System became aware on Nov. 6 that a former gastroenterologist, whose name was not released, used a Geisinger computer to e-mail protected health information on 2,928 patients to a personal e-mail account in an unencrypted manner. The news release says the former physician sent the information to complete an analysis of his procedures. Matthew Van Stone, Geisinger public relations coordinator, said patient information did not contain addresses, telephone numbers, Social Security numbers, patient account or financial information. “None of that was sent to his home,” Van Stone said. Patient information that was e-mailed included patient names, Geisinger medical record numbers, procedures and a physician’s brief impressions of care provided, he said. “Immediately upon speaking with the physician, he contacted and authorized his home e-mail provider to delete the protected health information from its network and servers,” stated Geisinger Privacy Officer John Gildersleeve in the news release. “He also deleted this information from his home computer.” Rachel Seeger, a senior health information privacy outreach specialist at the U.S. Health and Human Services, said the medical health care system is required under the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act of 2009 to issue a news release about the breach and to mail letters to affected patients. Gildersleeve stated in the release that notification letters to patients were completed. “If you did not receive a letter, your (Protected Health Information) was not included in the e-mail disclosure,” Gildersleeve stated. Seeger said the HHS regional office should receive notification about the breach from Geisinger. She could not disclose if an investigation will take place. “We do a check and balance to confirm that it is a legitimate incident,” Seeger said. “But we can’t comment on open investigations.”

So I have seen a bit about the Cyber Security Act in Congress right now and after looking up the proposed bill I have to wonder why this is being seen as such a bad thing? "A bill to ensure the continued free flow of commerce within the United States and with its global trading partners through secure cyber communications, to provide for the continued development and exploitation of the Internet and intranet communications for such purposes, to provide for the development of a cadre of information technology specialists to improve and maintain effective cybersecurity defenses against disruption, and for other purposes." "The bill would also give the President new authority to 'declare a cybersecurity emergency and order the limitation or shutdown of Internet traffic to and from any compromised Federal Government or United States critical infrastructure information system or network.'" I am all for it. The fact is that none of us right now have any security. Internet has not been regulated and ever since it became the major source for info, it has to have a major regulatory agency just like any other source of information. It is in fact the only unregulated media as of today. I've personally had to deal with this lack of security and my only recourse had been contacting the police who subsequently passed it on to the FBI. The FBI is so overloaded with complaints that by the time they would be able to get to my case, I would have probably forget all facts. This is how bad it gets, when things like that do not get properly regulated. Today, I am totally devastated.
