What is the best use of Instructional technology in the classroom (K-6)?

I'm looking to infuse more technology in my building (K-6) and just wondered what people were using for technology in their classrooms with their kids. Any websites and links would be appreciated. Thanks

What does the Technology:beyond the computer means in relation to the classroom?

This question is based on the issue of technology in the classroom ,its implications and recommendations

Technology in the future will be deeply embedded in the surrounding environment, it will be ubiquitous... It already is to a degree. There are computer chips embedded within our surrounding environment and most of the time, we are not even aware of them. The computer of the future will no longer be a box in the corner of your room. It will also be wire free. This is already happening with laptops. Future teaching technologies will allow, from a distance teaching through on line web cam and video rooms... This will eventually lead to three dimensional and virtual reality video rooms. Video conferencing is already a fact of reality and many businesses have board meetings from a distance. Further into the future we will be able to fully immerse our minds and bodies in virtual reality that mimics the real world, both through mind stimulation and touch stimulation. This virtual reality mimicry will at first be rudimentary. Indeed, such technology already exists. But as technology advances it will become more advanced. Virtual reality will reach a point where your virtual self can meet your virtual friend in a virtual chat room, that mimics the real world or any fantasy world you wish. A child for example will be able to have lessons from a virtual teacher in the comfort of their own home.

How to Evaluate Classroom Technology For Mathematics

Lately there seems to be never-ending chatter, both online and in the teacher's lounge, regarding the best way to integrate classroom technology into the elementary math curriculum. Regardless of the type of technology to be integrated (educational DVDs or videos, computers, the Internet, interactive whiteboard, etc.), the primary question seems to be "How do I know what is good instruction?"

Below is a list of criteria that can be used to evaluate classroom technology for inclusion in a math curriculum. This is, by no means, an exhaustive list.

o Allows for hands-on interaction or activities

o Offers an environment that fosters exploration of complex concepts

o Provides a method for concrete representation of abstract concepts

o Provides a way for students to gather data to be used in problem solving

o Motivates students to want to problem-solve

o Provides opportunities for application of mathematical knowledge and skills in meaningful ways

o Takes abstract mathematical concepts and makes them more visual

o Makes abstract mathematical concepts easier to understand

o Allows for exploration and discovery related to geometry

o Supports data analysis skills

o Allows for exploration and expression of data in a graphs and/or charts

o Promotes mathematical social interaction and discussion

o Provides motivating skills practice

o Provides a structured learning environment

o Provides guided instruction

o Allows for self-directed learning

When evaluating classroom technology, it is easy to become distracted by, and drawn to, the "bells and whistles" of a software program, the exceptional imagery on a particular website, or the music in an educational video and those things CAN be important. However, it is most crucial to focus on the educational quality of the tool being evaluated.

Regardless through which form of classroom technology the instruction is delivered, if it meets at least half of the criteria above, it is probably a good candidate for inclusion in your math curriculum.

The small company I work for is committed to creating quality educational videos for classroom instruction. From the earliest script stages, all subject area content, images, and music are intensely reviewed and selected for meeting appropriate grade level, curriculum objectives and standards for our proprietary productions. The videos we distribute are also screened to meet our high standards. Teachers in the 21st century classroom will be better educators if they understand how to use multi media in their lessons, if they understand the processes that research has shown to be the most effective for improved student performance, and if they know how to find quality video resources that will enhance their lessons.

Teachers, what are your opinions of classroom technology?

What kinds of technology do you use? If you don't use it, why not? What kinds of problems have you encountered? How do you see it affecting the educational process?

I think that classroom technology is a good thing, however there isn't enough training on how to use it effectively... so it ends up as a brilliant idea with horrible execution. I use a lot of PowerPoint and United Streaming. It keeps the students engaged and excited. I haven't encountered any problems because I have a high level of technological literacy. I think, when used correctly, it can enhance a student's learning experience. I also think people assume technology can eventually replace educators. It can't.

Two cool things I've used. 1) Have kids create their own webquests. I let my kids create a webquest, and then students randomly swap webquests with other students. They really get into it! 2) Podcasting. It's pretty cheap, and kids love it. I also use it to record my lectures and allow students who are absent to download them, so catching up isn't such a burden.

This is a neat classroom tool: I have one in my room and can not only project whatever is on my computer screen. vcr or computer dvd, but can also create flip charts, write on it, play games. Instructional flip charts can be saved too. Teachers can also create activities with hidden/revealed answers, etc. The students get a kick out of it. One of the best motivators is games and competitions, so students become very engaged when they can play activities on the whiteboard. It is pretty expensive, but my school district budgeted technology as a #1 priority and ALL classrooms in the entire county have a Promethean.
