Why do American politicians think the US owns the internet and want to give the president the power to shut it?

Down? "US President Barack Obama would be granted powers to seize control of and even shut down the internet under a new bill that describes the global internet as a US "national asset". Local lobby groups and academics have rounded on the plan, saying that, rather than combat terrorists, it would actually do them "the biggest favour ever" by terrorising the rest of the world, which is now heavily reliant on cyberspace. The proposed legislation, introduced into the US Senate by independent senator Joe Lieberman, who is chairman of the US Homeland Security committee, seeks to grant the President broad emergency powers over the internet in times of national emergency." Seeing as so much of the webs infrastructure is located in the US this would cripple the internet worldwide. Why do American politicians essentially want to grant the power for the president to silence the world?

Is the internet making us smarter or dumber?

If digital technology is endorsing the sloppiness of certain millennials, then the problem lies within the individual. The internet is very powerful, but only when it is used correctly and not taken for granted. Many millennials use the internet for moronic purposes, but that isn’t to say the internet moronic.

Agreed. Although I would argue that that sloppiness extends to many pre-millennials as well.

Technology Grants Internet

Gates Foundation Grants Internet Access Assistance to Us Public ...

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is continuously providing assistance to public libraries across the United States through Opportunity Online program. The philanthropic organization's grants cover installation and improvement of Internet access to help provide high-quality, fast, and free online connection to specific computer workstations and centers in public libraries, which in turn are used by many people.

Opportunity Online is granting assistance in the form of funding, technical support, and associated training for at least two years per public library. This program is primarily focused on assisting public libraries that are in turn serving bigger populations. Public libraries that are almost vulnerable to having obsolete technology are prioritized. Eligible libraries should at the same time be able to secure funding commitments before receiving any grant from the program. This is to make sure there is appropriate community support for maintenance of computer upgrades.

It is estimated that about 40% of the US population are still not enjoying Internet access at their homes. Thus, public libraries are serving and facilitating critical link between users and technology, especially to many who are not able to afford getting Internet access services on their own. It is not surprising that currently, millions of Americans are using Internet through public libraries in different purposes like earning long-distance education degrees, starting and advancing small businesses, finding critical information on jobs, learning better English, getting e-government services and information, and many more.

Most public libraries are applying for potential grants from Opportunity Online because Internet access has really become among the most essential services that are required by people. Library administrators assert that their facilities must be able to maintain technology tools to help more people access and use information and services offered online.

However, there are still many concerns and requirements that many public libraries should address as they start and keep facilitating Internet access to numerous users. First, the average 256 KBPS connection to Internet network has to be ramped up. At present, most libraries that are capable to connect online are not able to support bandwidth traffic activities like MP3 downloading (for sound and video files), video-streaming, and other forms of interactive communication.

Opportunity Online could commit to investing in public libraries' connectivity, training, research, and even advocacy. The program could not in any way fully takeover or fund what public libraries need. That is why aside from Opportunity Online grants, libraries should also secure other support from local governments and non-government organizations in their communities. The program is set to only jumpstart the initiative. In the long run, public libraries are expected to be able to support their online services on their own.

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, based in Seattle, is working to help many people lead productive, comfortable, and healthy lives. The organization is guided accordingly by the belief that every single life has real and equal value. Within developing countries, the foundation is focused on helping people improve their health and providing opportunities for them to stay out of hunger and burden from possible extreme poverty. In the US, the foundation seeks to make sure all people get the ability to seize opportunities to succeed. That is why providing Internet access is one of the priority projects of the organization.

Where can I find grants for new small businesses?

Where can I find grants for new small business owners? We are women-owned, are there special grants for women owned businesses? It is also dealing with internet and technology

It is hard to find grants to start a business -- even for women business owners. Unlike the myths that some perpetuate, federal government and even private foundations hardly give grant money for a for-profit business. There is a grant called 59.043 Women's Business Ownership Assistance but it is given to those who will create women's business center that will train women entrepreneurs. Not for women entrepreneurs starting a business Nonetheless, you can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) and Grants.gov - these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support a for-profit venture. Even if you buy books on "how to get grants" or list that supposedly has information on grants -- all of them are mere rehash of what CFDA has, albeit packaged differently. But still the info is the same - hardly any grants for starting a for profit business. Even SBA does NOT give out grants. From the SBA website "The U.S. Small Business Administration does not offer grants to start or expand small businesses, although it does offer a wide variety of loan programs. (See for more information) While SBA does offer some grant programs, these are generally designed to expand and enhance organizations that provide small business management, technical, or financial assistance. These grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments." Here is a listing of federal grants for small businesses. See if there is any available for individuals for starting a business -- THERE'S NONE. Most of the federal grants are given to specific target groups with specific requirements (e.g. minority business owners involved in transportation related contracts emanating from DOT - Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program Grants are also often given to non profit groups or organizations involved in training or other similar activities For private grants, you may want to check the Foundation Center's Foundation Grants for Individuals Online. It's a subscription based website ($9.95 per month) but their opening blurb only says that the database is ideal for "students, artists, academic researchers, libraries and financial aid offices." Entrepreneurs are apparently not one of them, so I take it they also don't have listings of private foundations who give grants to would-be entrepreneurs.

Business Fraud and Internet Fraud

What is the real goal of No Child Left Behind?

According to an email from my congressman: " The House leadership has proposed a FY2007 Labor-HHS-Education appropriations bill that would: *Freeze Title I formula grants, denying reading and math instruction to 3.7 million low- income children; *Cut the Federal share of special education funding to 17 percent (compared to the 40 percent the Federal government promised to pay); *Cut teacher training grants by $300 million, denying 73,500 teachers the training they need to meet the "highly qualified" standard; *Eliminate education technology grants that help schools upgrade computers and Internet technologies; *Cut Safe and Drug Free Schools programs - which help protect our kids from drugs and violence - by $40 million; and *Freeze funding for afterschool programs, failing to serve 2 million children who have no supervised place to go after school." Ok, yeah--I used to teach, so I know what it is SUPPOSED to do. . . but how is it supposed to DO that without funding? I guess that's what I really want to know.

More repuglican bull, cut programs because there is an evil war to fight. A war that wasn't needed, a war that was started based on a lie from the president. Add all of that up and it comes to 10 billion a month. I don't think that your list has would come up to that in a year. I wonder which is more important the kids or the war. Repuglicans should be ashamed of themselves but they are not. But this is really another reason to not vote for a repuglican in three weeks.

Is ACN a Company You Can Trust? - Fake Or Fraud!

Expert Author Grant O'Kane. American Communications Network, or ACN as it is commonly known, is a technology company with a product line

If your whole family had no internet access, no tv and no electronic games...?

what would you all do? ideas such as read, play a board game, sing music, go a bike ride, have a chat, paint? or something else? I think we all take for granted technology and need to use our imagination more. what do YOU think?

Given that you just pretty much described the first 20 years of my life... We read a great deal, biked and hiked a lot and played board games at least once a week. When not doing family stuff, chores, homework, reading or the like, us kids were outside running around with all the other kids from the neighborhood, playing football, baseball, kick the can or just messing around. Sure, we'd go over to a friends house to watch TV or play computer games sometimes, but I never really felt I was missing all that much. Of course, given that we're talking Colecovision and Commodore 64 games, maybe I wasn't :)

How do wires transfer data in computers and the internet and iPods?

Let's take an iPod for example, it is connected to the computer through a thin usb line. How is it possible that pictures, sounds, and videos are transferred through this wire? I feel like many people take technology for granted as I am one of them, but now I must learn how this works.

First, all your data is in digital form or in other words electrical form.Means it works on electricity. USB cables carry electrical current, which pushes packets of data back and forth between devices. USB ports are wired directly to the motherboard, establishing their connection to the processor, hard drive and concurrently operating software.that's why it acts like a normal drive when you plugin to your computer. That's all to it

Is technology the culprit?

I read about how rock isn't the same; rock is dead; there are no more epic bands. Think about this: it seems that most opinions of when the "great" bands and rock ended coincide with the advent of the Internet and widespread use of technology. I'm just wondering if the relatively instant nature of our world today takes any of the magic out of rock. In the past, we waited for as long as it took for the new album of whomever to come out; we had only snippets of information from radio and the print media as to when that was going to be. The release of any major group's album was a much anticipated event, and there was NO pre-releases of songs, etc., on the 'Net (heck, there was no Internet!) to tease us. Granted, there don't seem to be the causes around today like we had then. Vietnam alone was cause enough. It seemed to collectively group us and give people a direction. Is that why music today seems narcissistic and angst ridden? Is technology the culprit? Your thoughts, please. *Edit - this is exactly what I was hoping for; well thought-out opinions with substance. All of you answerers are making the choice difficult, and that is not a bad thing.

The answers to this question are obviously going to be subjective to the age of the person answering it. I've been listening to rock music for over 50 years, and I can get into to both current bands, as well as stuff from the past. Here's my opinion, which I'm very sure younger people who limit themselves to bands like, Arcade Fire, Snow Patrol, Arctic Monkeys, Bloc Party, etc, will strongly oppose. I think that 'rock and roll' losing it's ability to come up with something new and fresh may have coincided with technological advancements, MTV, the internet etc. The two combined has brought us to our current state of these "cookie cutter" bands, and their brainwashed minions. I remember back in the day when in order for a band to promote their music, or an album, and gain any sort of recognition, they had to tour their a**'s off. These days bands go into a studio and produce a couple videos. Blogs and email blasts help many of todays bands gain notoriety also. So much is lost through this process. MTV and the big record companies ie, Sony/BMG, really dictated and controlled (for the most part) what young people listened to in the 80s, 90s, and now, through marketing and other little tricks. I read somewhere that many major labels are making more money selling T-shirts, and other band related memorabilia than they are from selling CD's these days! In my opinion rock and roll has basically been regurgitating itself in one form or another since the late 70's. Actually, we haven't seen a truly original wave of music since the late 60's early 70's with bands like Vanilla Fudge, The Doors, Iron Butterfly, Blue Cheer, Deep Purple, Sabbath etc. Those guys were doing something new and fresh, and since then it's all just been a re-hash of the same old thing. Consider the fact that the aforementioned bands grew up listening to Elvis, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Early Beatles etc. Then realize that their music sounded nothing like the heroes they grew up with. That's because they had an original sound. Punk Rock was refreshing, but all it did was take on 60's garage band ideals, and proto punk (Stooges, NY Dolls, Mc5) attitude and give it a stir. So yeah, combine technology with lack of originality, and you've got a couple generations of really bad music, that might only impress someone who doesn't know any better. Though I do listen to loads of newer bands...it's just not the same. We're basically kicking a dead horse!
