Applying to Kenyan Universities is a fairly straight forward process provided you master the basics. Because the number of form four graduates has been increasing over the years, more and more high students are finding it extremely hard to gain a place in Kenyan Public Universities. The seven public universities in Kenya each have a fixed number of students that they admit per year mostly pegged on bed capacity. The public Universities include;University of Nairobi (UON), JKUAT, MOI, Kenyatta University among others. The official grade for acceptance into a Kenyan University is C+ but this is rarely observed. As such many students are unable to secure a place in the country's public Universities even if they have perfectly good grades.
Although the best and brightest Kenyan high school students comfortably get a place in the public Universities, some choose to attend private Universities because of the generally peaceful and serene environment in these Universities. Some of the private Universities include: Strathmore, Daystar among others. A number of students also choose to attend college as privately sponsored students (parallel degree) students. They pay an extremely high amount of school fees to get the same services and quality of teaching as the government sponsored students. The fees charged by private schools is much higher compared to the fees charged by the public Universities. However, there are no students strikes that occur in private Universities as compared to public Universities. It is also important to note that there are institutions that fall somewhere between Universities and Colleges. These are referred to as University colleges and they include Kenya Polytechnic, Mombasa Polytechnic, Kimathi University College among others.
Because almost all the Kenyan Universities offer the same courses and have the same facilities, it is hard to pick out the best Kenyan Universities. There are no reliable Kenyan University rankings to give the students a true picture though some Universities are reputed to be of prominence in certain fields. Lastly, though getting a scholarship in Kenyan private Universities is hard, a number of them do offer scholarships.
For instance, Strathmore in collaboration with EABL offers a four year undergraduate scholarship in Commerce and Information Technology. For the extremely gifted Kenyan high school students, getting a scholarship to an Ivy League University is almost guaranteed. A number of students from leading schools such as Alliance, Nairobi School, Kenya High and others have obtained full scholarships to these prestigious institutions.
